Grab Bag with an ark full

Time for the weekly Grab Bag again!

I got a question from Eric in the comments from the last Grab Bag:
How long was Noah, his family, and the animals housed within the Ark?

We can’t know for sure how long they were on the ark, it doesn’t say “they were on the ark for x amount of days”.
What we can do is use the scripture to get a round about time frame. The below shows when the flood started to occur, at this point they were already on the ark for 7 days.

Genesis 7:10-11
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.

Genesis 8:14-16
14 And in the second month, on the seven and twentieth day of the month, was the earth dried.
15 And God spake unto Noah, saying,
16 Go forth of the ark, thou, and thy wife, and thy sons, and thy sons’ wives with thee.

If we use our current calendar, yes the modern one, Noah and company entered into the ark on February 10th. The rain came 7 days later. When they finally got off of the ark it was February 27th of the next year. So lets do some addition and subtraction. There are 365 days in a year. 27 – 10 = 17. So, 17 + 365 = 382 days. Now the Jewish calendar is probably the calendar which they went by. The Jewish calendar only has 29-30 days in a month and 12-13 months in a year… depending on how everything falls. It just so happens to be similar enough to the calendar we currently use and we can also guess around the same time. So the time frame I would give? Between 375 – 395 days, just to give a little buffer because I really don’t know for sure.

Thanks for the question Eric!

Did God create evil?

Isaiah 45:7
I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.

From the looks of it here, he did.

What is Godliness?

1 Timothy 4:8
For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.

Here, godliness is compared to bodily exercise. Each are profitable, but only one is profitable unto all things. If bodily exercise profit little, then spiritual exercise is profitable unto all things. Yes? Godliness = Spiritual exercise :)

  1. Although it is a mighty step to enter into the house of the Lord and come together to worship once or twice a week, I believe that we must perform acts everyday outside of the church to further develop the soul in the way God intended. Can you expand on some concrete examples of spiritual exercise and explain how one will know that they are becoming spiritually stronger?

    • Ok, so Spiritual exercise would be “doing the word of God”, not just hearing the word.
      James 1:22
But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
To do the word, you have to hear the word to know what it’s telling you. So one concrete example would be to study the word! 2 Timothy 2:15 tells us to study!
1 Thessalonians 5:17 Pray without ceasing. So part of what we should be doing in the word is praying without ceasing. Non-stop prayer? The more in tune we get with God the better. We can hear his voice more clearly.

      I hope this helps! :)

  2. In reference to the scripture regarding the creation of evil, why does it exist? Does it exist to challenge us to ultimately become stronger and draw closer to God?

    • Part of this is cause and effect. Because light was created darkness was shone. E.G. When you turn on a light in a room shadows are everywhere. Without light you don’t see the darkness.
Ezekiel 28:15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.
How was it found? Light revealed it to be there.
Now was it for us to draw closer? I can only say, remember the purpose.
1 John 3:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

Both of the comments were covered in the Podcast episode posted earlier today. Let me know if you have anymore questions!
